There is simply so much to do and see during a visit to Hollywood that many of our guests find they need to return again and again to even begin covering it all! One of our favorite activities is exploring all the incredible places that feature live music – including jazz. With fellow jazz-lovers in mind, we’ve compiled a list of our top five jazz joints in and around Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.
The Old West meets New Orleans at this southern-style townhouse in the heart of Hollywood. Featuring incredible house-made ginger beer, sassafras, and barrel aged cocktails, this unique bar and lounge also features live music including jazz every Sunday — like the amazing Rumproller Organ Trio! It also features better than average bar food – the sliders are delicious, the fried mozzarella perfect, and the sweet potatoes fries fabulous. If you’re looking for great music, fantastic drinks and good food in a memorable atmosphere, then this is the place.
Don’t let the exterior of this small mall in Little Tokyo fool you. It’s home to one of the best jazz clubs in Hollywood. A hidden gem generally frequented only by those in the know, with a reasonable cover and no set drink requirement, it’s all about the music here – and the Blue Whale has its finger on the pulse of the best live jazz in the city. CD release parties are common, and jam sessions bring in new talents on a regular basis. Be aware, however, that this is not a place to come for conversation as people take a poor view of talkers. And the cube-shaped seats are not the most comfortable – but the music here is completely worth it.
UCLA’s impressive 1,800-seat theater, named for American philosopher Josiah Royce, has hosted legendary performances starting in the 1930s – including greats like Duke Ellington, the Jimmy Dorsey Band, Arnold Schoenberg and George Gershwin. The jazz musicians who play this stage are always outstanding and truly reflect the diversity of the current jazz scene. The Romanesque design helps to make this one of the most elegant places to enjoy live jazz in Los Angeles.
The jazz is definitely the main attraction at this intimate club in Hollywood. You may just get a glimpse of Roy Hargrove smoking in the parking lot before a show or Christian McBride sipping on a drink after the show is over. Always on top of the jazz scene – as it should be since it’s one of the pricier venues – the lineup here manages to mix an impressive roster of jazz greats with local and emerging musicians. There is a two-drink minimum in addition to admission cost, and reservations are highly recommended.
Whether you lean toward classic jazz or more modern variations, you’ll always find jazz greats and up-and-comers performing someplace in LA. For more recommendations, you can always ask our knowledgeable concierge at The London West Hollywood. We want your visit here – whether it’s your first or simply most recent – to be incredible.
